About Virunga National Park
Virunga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo and one of the world’s most biologically diverse protected areas. They are embarking on an ambitious development programme known as the “Virunga Alliance” which aims harness the wealth of the Park to help build new jobs and opportunities for the local population.
Why They Need Our Help
The Park is situated in a region which has been deeply impacted by the effects of war and armed conflict for over 20 years. It is currently protected by a dedicated team of 689 Rangers risk their lives on a daily basis to safeguard the Park’s exceptional wildlife, including the last of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas.
It saddens me to say that over 200 brave rangers have been killed whilst serving the Park.
Why We Are Pledging Our Support
Aside from having grown up in the Congo and falling in love with the country’s natural beauty, I want our business to support the preservation of national parks and animal welfare as much as possible. We are also hugely supportive of their goals to reduce poverty and contribute to peace in the region. In fact many of the Park’s adjacent populations are living in extreme poverty, falling below the ‘extreme poverty threshold’.
The Newest Member Of the Team
Ndeze a beautiful mountain Gorilla. In 2007, Ndeze’s mother, Safari, was brutally murdered, along with four other adult gorillas, including silverback Senkwekwe. Several days after the massacre, Ndeze was found clinging to her brother’s back. She was too young to survive without her mother’s milk, so the vets intervened and relocated her to a temporary facility in Goma where she met Ndakasi. This is where the pair became close friends before moving permanently to the sanctuary in 2007.
